Dental crowns can restore broken or decayed teeth, add strength and prevent further damage

A crown is a specially-made cap that is placed over a tooth and bonded in place by strong dental adhesive or cement.

Dental crowns can be made from gold or metal alloys as well as natural-colour material such as ceramics. A combination of metal and ceramic is also possible to maximise strength and simulate the appearance of natural teeth.

What are dental crowns used for?

Crowns can be used for several reasons:

  • As a protective cover for badly decayed teeth or fractured teeth
  • As a permanent restoration for teeth with large fillings
  • To correct minor problems such as spacing, irregular shape or severe discolouration in natural teeth

A dental crown repairs tooth damage for comfortable eating and a healthy smile.

What is the treatment procedure for a crown?

A dental crown treatment generally takes three appointments to complete.

Firstly, your dentist conducts a thorough clinical examination to assess the suitability of a crown treatment. You’ll receive advice on the most appropriate dental crown material, the treatment sequence and answers to any questions you may have.

During your next appointment, your dentist will prepare the teeth to be crowned. This involves a reduction of the damaged tooth (usually under local anaesthesia) creating the space for the new crown.

An impression or mould of the prepared tooth is taken and then sent to the laboratory where skilled technicians will custom-make your crown. In the meantime, your dentist will make and fit a temporary crown onto the reshaped tooth.

At the final appointment, the temporary crown is removed and the tooth surfaces are cleaned. Once the crown fits on the tooth with a harmonious bite and appearance, the crown is permanently bonded into place.

A dental crown can save damaged teeth, restoring their form and function, improving oral health and enhancing your smile.

How long do crowns last and how should I care for them?

Crowns are made of inert materials that do not deteriorate over time. However, the ceramic on the surface may chip or fracture and the underlying tooth is still prone to decay and gum disease.

We recommend avoiding chewing excessively-hard items like ice or nuts. Daily brushing and flossing are essential for maintaining good oral health and keeping your crowned tooth healthy.

Coming to see your dentist for regular check-ups allows us to detect any problems with your crown and recommend treatment as necessary.

If you have an existing crown that is loose, damaged or unsightly, we may be able to fit a new crown to improve comfort and enhance the appearance of your teeth.
