Fillings are a common dental treatment to fill tooth cavities

A dental filling is an amalgam or resin composite material used to repair tooth cavities caused by decay.

These symptoms may mean you have a cavity that requires filling:

  • Sensitivity
  • Toothache
  • Bad breath
  • Dark areas on the tooth surface
  • Pain when eating

A filling can often relieve the pain and sensitivity caused by tooth cavities, prevent further damage and extend the life of the tooth.

White Fillings

Most people have fillings of one sort or another. Today, there are natural looking alternatives to the traditional dark amalgam – the composite or tooth-coloured filling.

A composite resin is a tooth-coloured plastic mixture filled with glass (silicon dioxide). Originally only used for front teeth because of their softer nature, modern improvements to their composition make them generically suitable today.

White composite fillings are more complex to place than silver fillings so may take a little longer to complete. As white fillings are considered to be a cosmetic treatment, they are not available on the NHS.

Composite fillings are popular due to their aesthetic appeal, although they may not last as long as silver fillings depending on the depth of the cavity and its position. However, new materials are now available with properties comparable to silver amalgam, and these are proving to be very successful.

Your dentist will advise you of the dental filling options open to you during your consultation.
